Scottsdale is a relatively new city, since it was only incorporated in 1951.  The original name of the area was Orangetown, named for the citrus groves planted by the original landowner, Winfield Scott.  After a series of floods hindered his crops, Winfield decided to try to bring settlers to his future town.  The little farming community grew into an upscale resort area, complete with the finest hotels, spas, restaurants and shopping.  The U.S. Conference of Mayors named Scottsdale one the nations "most livable cities" in 1993.  Other awards include "Number One Resort Community in America", "A Fabulous Place to Retire" and "Most Western Town".  In 2002, the Robb Report called Scottsdale "America's Best Place To Live For Golf".  The city was also the first to have a strict sign ordinance, regulating and prohibiting large signs and billboards and even buildings.  Other civic innovations include a privately owned fire department and the invention of robot armed sanitation trucks.  Today, this beautiful community is an international vacation destination for everything from Arabian Horse Shows to the Phoenix Golf Open to Barrett-Jackson's Car Auction.

Frank Lloyd Wright was certainly one individual to leave his imprint on the city.  He came to the city in 1937 and set up his winter base in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains.  His home and campus became known as Taliesin West and offers tours that should be on your must see list.    Get ultimate relaxation with a trip to either Willow Stream Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess or the Spa at Camelback Inn.  In the mood for a drive-in movie?  Do you even remember drive-in movies?  Scottsdale's West Wind 6 offers six screens with current releases that you listen to through your car's FM stereo.  Don't forget Scottsdale Center For the Arts or the Scottsdale Historical Museum for your upscale culture fix.

Let's start out our discussion on dining with one thing you must do while in Scottsdale.  Arizona Food Tours' "A Taste of Old Town Scottsdale" is a three hour walking tour where you will sample great food, sip fine wine, and hear tales of rich history.  When you finish with shopping in Old Town, travel over to the Scottsdale Fashion Square for the very best in every category.  The Borgata and Kierland Commons are also destinations you will want to visit.  Your options for fine dining are limited only by your cuisine preference and pocketbook.  Scottsdale boosts a number of chefs listed on the "Ten Best New Chefs in America" list by Food and Wine.

Many still will come just for the golf.  Troon North Golf Club, Kierland, McCormick Ranch, Grayhawk, and of course Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale lead the list of many courses waiting for you.  Living in Scottsdale is a dream for many people in the country.
