The area that is now Phoenix was once settled by the Hohokam Indians several thousand years ago. When they left in the 15th century, there were no permanent settlements here until the pioneers arrived. It was not until Fort McDowell was built in 1865 at the eastern end of the Salt River valley, that this area was safe for settling. In 1867, Jack Swilling of Wickenberg was traveling through the valley and noticed the farming potential. He organized the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company and moved into the area. It was Darrell Duppa who suggested the name Phoenix, recognizing the new town rising out of the ruins of a former civiliazation. Today, Phoenix is the capitol and largest city in Arizona, as well as the fifth largest city in the country.
Given the size of the city, you can imagine all the things that are available to see and do. Here, you can find the first baseball field in the world to combine a natural turf field and air conditioning, all under a roof that can open or close in under five minutes! The Heard Museum is a great place to visit and learn about the art and culture of the first inhabitants of our valley. Phoenix also has a well rounded restaurant scene, with many tastes represented and a wide range of upscale dining and inexpensive casual choices. In our part of the country, steakhouses are predominant. Most of the nice chains are here, headed by Morton's, Houston's, Ruth's Chris, and Donovan's. The local favorite, for the insider crowd, is Durant's. Of course, Mexican and southwest cuisines are popular here too. Your best bet is to use your favorite search engine and look for your area and favorite cuisine. We have found many restaurants we would not have otherwise tried. Some have gone on to become favorites for years.
